Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard University, 1992.
The Efe Pygmies of the Ituri Forest, Zaire, are half-time hunter-gatherers who also exchange labor and forest products for agricultural good with nearby farmers. I describe the Efe's land use system, especially as it relates to the use of forest resources. My analysis of this land use system is both ethnoarchaeological and ecological, employing methods from landscape ecology and foraging theory.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The Efe live in small groups, each with a well defined, long and linear territory. Each territory has a main, central trail connecting a string of habitually reused camps that are spaced at regular intervals. Each territory is about 20 km long and 1-2 km wide, and runs from agricultural villages into the deep forest and eventually to uplands, transecting several habitats.

Efe develop an intensive knowledge of their territory, which increases their ability to acquire cryptic, dispersed resources. This knowledge, mostly limited to their own territory, does not aid them significantly in other, unknown areas.

The Efe do not merely extract resources from their environment, but often enhance them through use. This thesis documents the Efe's effects on the distribution of certain edible fruit trees: These trees are up to twice as abundant in areas habitually used by the Efe than in more distant, ecologically similar areas. My analysis suggests that the Efe disperse these plants' seeds.

This thesis also contributes to an ongoing debate about whether or not human hunter-gatherers lived in an equatorial rain forest in the absence of food obtained from farmers. This contribution consists of an analysis of the recent prehistory of Central Africa, placing foraging and agriculture in the eastern Central African rain forest in a broad historical framework. This historical perspective supports the argument that foragers did live in this rain forest.
