The commercial catfish industry has grown rapidly over recent years and now exceeds all other domestic aquaculture industries combined in total production and economic value. Concurrent with this growth has come an increase in the incidence of Edwardsiella ictaluri outbreaks, the causative agent for Enteric Septicemia of Catfish (ESC). In 1997, almost half of the catfish farmers surveyed reported 50% or more of their losses were due to this disease. Only one antibiotic, Romet-30RTM, is approved for use in channel catfish for the treatment of ESC and it's efficacy is questionable.

The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of Romet-30 RTM against E. ictaluri in channel catfish by evaluating palatability of the drug, effects on bacterial septicemia and pathology, pharmacokinetics, and in-vivo drug activity. Catfish fingerlings consumed Romet-30RTM medicated feed containing 16% menhaden fish meal. Bacteria counts in blood and posterior kidney and gross lesions were reduced during a five day treatment interval; however, there was no effect on hepatic pathology and gross lesions developed following treatment. Plasma and liver residues detected biochemically exceeded the minimum inhibitory concentration of Romet-30RTM against E. ictaluri by several fold, and drug half-life appeared sufficient to maintain adequate levels over the 24 hour dosing interval. The microbiological assay indicated lower drug levels with a shorter half-life than the residues detected biochemically, suggesting minimally effective drug activity. Romet30RTM appears to inhibit E. ictaluri; however, the dose is marginally adequate and only effective in controlling the bacteria during the course of therapy. Romet-30RTM should not be relied upon as the sole approach to management of ESC.
