Many scholars have noted the influence Marie de France's gender has on her Lais. Some suggest she proposes revolution against the patriarchy, while others see her gender as merely influencing her discourse. I suggest that Marie's unique discursive practices revolutionize the speech of not only women, but also men who are marginalized by the patriarchy. However, rather than seeking to overturn the patriarchy, Marie's discursive practices exist outside of the binary system of master and slave or included and excluded. To establish that this discourse can be recognized as part of a radical plan to ameliorate the social structure, I examine how various marginalized characters within the Lais react to their silencing under the patriarchal structure. Some do not recognize their silencing or cannot overcome it, while others voice their dissent against the patriarchy. When the speakers realize that neither of these solutions helps, some look for a new method of communicating. The characteristics that I establish as distinguishing and revolutionizing Marie's discourse include the establishment of a new sense of community and the need for a new semiotic system that is, in turn, only accessible to a few. Unfortunately, it seems that for Marie de France these options exist only slimly and have little chance of success when the only really "happy endings" involve an escape from patriarchy.
