Many newspaper articles depict individuals who have a familial history of policing; however, scholarly literature on this topic is almost non-existent. Based on the available literature regarding socialization and recruiting in police departments, it was determined that family members can play a role in their family members' occupation later in life; however, research previously conducted by the author revealed that the majority of police officers did not have a family history of policing and did not attempt to recruit their relatives. The researcher's ultimate mission for completing this study is to understand how negative views impact a career in law enforcement, as often perceived through the media and public. These views may cause those in the profession to discourage other family members from joining the ranks. This study will also attempt to explain the shortage of police recruits in America in the 21st Century by focusing on the Houston Police Department and surveying 200 of its officers. The paper will focus on recruitment in police departments with regards to gender and race/ethnicity. The research will provide insight as to why the respondents became police officers and the likelihood of an officer recruiting a family member. It will additionally reveal possible reasons why police officers avoid recruiting family members. Solutions regarding the shortage of police applicants and retention of police officers in the United States might hinge on better understanding those currently in the career of policing.
