The purpose of this research is to identify landscaping features and practices which can be used in to increase human~nature interaction on the Northern Arizona University Flagstaff campus. Increasing a person's exposure to natural elements has been shown to improve various aspects of physical and mental health. Some aspects are particularly beneficial to students, such as reduced stress responses, decreases in mental fatigue, and improved cognition. In order to have these benefits, however, students (and other members of the college community) must be willing and able to spend time in nature.

Northern Arizona University has a variety of landscape features already in place, such as flowerbeds, grassy lawns, and planted trees, as well as remnant parcels of the locally-dominant ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa ) forest. What other kinds of landscape elements can be introduced that might entice people to spend time outdoors? To answer this, I explored other schools in the western United States to see what landscape features they were using. The dominant features included edible and research gardens, arboreta, and native plantings. I then used permaculture principles to choose features that would be best suited to Flagstaff's unique climate and geology. As a final, practical application, I chose two locations on campus that could be redesigned for better human~nature engagement. I include implementation and maintenance recommendations, plant choices, and structure suggestions, and also identify best-use for each location (i.e. educational opportunity, relaxation, food production, etc.).
