Cybersecurity and cyber threats in addition to cybercrime continue to be critical issues among industries; especially with the ubiquity of the internet. These cyber threats are inevitable and unpredictable, with increasing deleterious impacts financially as well as with reputations. Cyber threats have become prominent challenges, more specifically, the recent high profile and high dollar data breaches. These highly targeted and increasingly sophisticated attacks on the financial industry are concerning as several groups such as, nation states, hacktivists, cyber terrorists and even organized crime are taking interest. Banks are currently at a critical juncture; over the last few years the attack landscape has seen considerable alterations.

Banks have a responsibility to have an extensive cybersecurity plan to ensure that third party service providers are not a backdoor for cyber criminals. The purpose of this research was to examine the cybersecurity regulations between third party service providers and the banking industry, reviewing what protocols are being used to vet third party service providers, what current regulations are, in addition to what risk management framework could be employed.

The results have shown that there is an undisputable need for cyber regulations that incorporate a standard vetting process coupled with a cyber assessment tool and risk management framework. To date, there is only a proposal by the New York Department Financial Services to incorporate some of these changes.
