Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2015.
Together Johan Grimonprez's film, dial H.I.S.T.O.R.Y., and Don DeLillo's fictional novels, White Noise and Mao II, critique and display the contemporary experience saturated by technology and the media. As dial H.I.S.T.O.R.Y. hones in on a specific historical topic, Cold War era airplane hijackings, Grimonprez is able to reveal the ways in which the media has gained influential power over contemporary cultures allowing the viewer to contemplate the role the media plays within their own lives. Through Grimonprez's inclusion of quotes from two fictional novels, White Noise and Mao II, throughout the film, he has created a fictional platform in which to build his critique, further demonstrating the significance that fictional elements have on a daily basis. Placing these works within a postmodern discourse and focusing on the media's techniques and the role of narrative within our lives, this thesis explores the ways in which reality is constructed in the same manner as a fictional narrative demonstrating that reality cannot escape fiction.
