Conceptual Art is a term that came into use in the late 1960's to describe artworks in which the concept or idea behind the artwork is more important than traditional aesthetic and material concerns---what it looks like or how it is made. The idea behind conceptual artwork is the artwork. The aim of conceptual art is for the viewer to walk away not with a memory of a pleasing image, but the message the conceptual artist attempts to convey. This is important when it comes to raising social consciousness, because the memory of the message or idea is something that can be pondered and explored on a personal level, long after leaving the gallery or museum.

This paper will discuss and compare two conceptual artists. The first is Felix Gonzalez-Torres, a Cuban-born, homosexual artist whose work drew attention to the AIDS epidemic in New York City in the late 1980's and early 1990's. His non-traditional, often ambiguous artwork spoke to both heterosexual and homosexual populations in a manner that fostered tolerance of homosexuality. The second is Ai Weiwei, a living but essentially imprisoned Chinese artist, whose art aims not only to expose but also dismantle unjust governmental policies in China, and at the same time, advocate for global civil rights. Both artists were born in the same year, 1957, but although there are similarities between their works, their techniques for advocating for social change are different. While Felix Gonzalez-Torres died in 1996, and therefore could not take advantage of the Internet, Weiwei has the advantage of living in the post-Internet world, where he greatly capitalizes on advances in technology, especially social media, to spread his message.
