Focusing on mass-produced images of the first five years of the Turkish Republic (1923--1928), this study demonstrates the extent to which political cartoons participated in the process of nationalist myth-making from the modern state's inception. These cartoons project spectacular narratives of the new Republic's abolitionist reforms and in this way constitutes mass-produced visual culture capable of shaping modernist public discourses.

The images that emerge from this period of rapid transition vividly reflect a wide spectrum of responses to various aspects of the larger modernization project in Turkey: from fear of reactionary opposition to the secularization of law and education (1924--1926) to overwhelming hope and faith in the new government actively legislating sweeping reforms such as the abolishment of the Caliphate (1924) and alphabet reform (1928). I demonstrate that these cartoons and the rise of popular print media in the twentieth century were integral to the formation of a visual analogue to an "imagined" notion of Turkish national identity precisely at a moment when these identifiers were in flux.

These cartoons developed a method of propagating reform using text- and image-based contrastive discourses of transformation that persist to this day, especially with regard to the issues of modernization and secularization. Surveying the ways in which popular cartoon arts inflected, manipulated, and even subverted an existing Ottoman visual culture to fit the needs and visions of Turkish Republican leaders and intellectuals, my research underscores the contested nature of visual political discourse at this critical moment.
