Thesis (M.A.)--Gonzaga University, 2016.
Communication is a critical piece of an individual's success in the workforce. It plays a prominent role in any organization. In traditionally male-dominated fields, gender is reported on in more studies than any other variable. Yet the difference in how men and women communicate at work is a missing component in much of the current research. This study looked to fill this void by speaking directly to women in the workforce, with a focus on the sales industry in professional sports. It uses two theories as its foundation for research---standpoint theory and gender socialization theory. The goal was to understand women's perceptions of the sports sales industry and how they personally fit into it. The results confirmed that women working in sales in the sports industry perceive significant differences and disadvantages compared to their male counterparts. Three areas in particular---presence (or lack thereof), relationships with coworkers and clients, and interoffice environment were emphasized most by respondents. This thesis hopes to allow for growth in research in both gender communication and the field of sports sales.
