A comprehensive study to develop a stream classification system that could be used to identify potential suitable salmon habitats was conducted in the upper Tachia River basin, the historical range of the Formosan landlocked salmon, during 1987 through 1994. Freshwater fish fauna in three major lotic ecosystems of western Taiwan were investigated to identify basic relationships among fish species distribution. Habitat requirements of Formosan landlocked salmon were examined at three spatial scales: stream reaches, mesohabitat, and microhabitat. Data were converted into a Geographic Information System (GIS) model that facilitated analysis of temporal and spatial relationships between the salmon and its environment.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Potentially suitable habitat for Formosan landlocked salmon can be quickly identified by the presence of native sympatric species, maximum summer temperature of less than 18$\sp\circ$C, and elevation of greater than 1600 m asl. Mesohabitat selection of the salmon was affected by spatial, bioenergetics, and habitat factors, which resulted in different salmon densities in six mesohabitat types. Pool habitats provided refuge from strong current and for overwintering, riffle habitats were used for feeding, and run habitats were important for spawning. These habitat relationships suggests that more than 25% of pool-run habitat within a stream section is crucial to maintain a self-sustaining salmon population.

Analyses of water depth, current velocity, instream cover, and substrate type between available and occupied habitat units suggest that microhabitat selection is related to fish size, water temperature, and activities throughout the life history of the Formosan landlocked salmon. Newly emerged fry used low velocity habitats with abundant instream cover extensively. More than 50% of the salmon from 5 to 9 cm moved into deeper water having moderate current and less instream cover. Adult salmon selected slower, shallower sites with abundant instream cover for resting and moderate velocity, deeper sites with less instream cover for feeding. Spawning Formosan landlocked salmon preferred shallower waters with slower currents, and small to moderate substrate sizes.

Demographic counts made by underwater observations in the Chichiawan Stream showed that the production of the salmon was declining due to fluctuating, but gradually decreasing numbers of young-of-the-year fish within the population. Both stochastic and deterministic mechanisms influenced the abundance and distribution of salmon. Natural disturbances interacting with antrophogenic factors have contributed to the spatial and temporal variability of salmon habitat. In most recent times, human impacts are responsible for the failure of efforts to manage ecosystems in the upper Tachia River watershed. Without conservation measures, declines toward extinction for many fish species can be expected. There is an urgent need to restore the salmon distribution into other streams. The stream classification system developed as part of this project identified Nanhu Stream as the best site for initial salmon reintroduction.
