Thesis (Ph.D.)--Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 2016.
The work contained herein makes a meaningful contribution the field of multibody dynamics in a variety of ways: (1) a new analytical model for highly-flexible bodies based on geometrically exact beam theory is developed that is compatible with the adaptive DCA framework. This allows the efficient simulation of dynamic systems containing rigid-bodies and bodies undergoing small or large deformations and lays the mathematical framework for adaptive changes in body-type. (2) a method for computing the long-range electrostatic potential is developed that maximizes computational efficiency when using multibody-based coarse-grained models for molecular simulations. (3) the relevance of the underlying formulation is ensured by demonstrating its performance on GPU-type hardware, which is changing the landscape of scientific computing.
