Thesis (Ph.D.)--Princeton University, 1999.
The main aim of this dissertation is to offer a detailed analysis of the political thought of the French doctrinaires during the Bourbon Restoration (1814--1830), with a special emphasis on the writings of Francois Guizot, Pierre Royer-Collard, Charles de Remusat, and Prosper de Barante. The doctrinaires are one of the last "virgin forests" in the history of modern political thought awaiting to be discovered in the English-speaking world. As advocates of juste milieu, the doctrinaires attempted to constitutionalize the liberties and principles of 1789 and contributed to the building and consolidation of representative government in France. Their writings and ideas also had a profound impact on Alexis de Tocqueville, whose Democracy in America was written under of influence of both Guizot and Royer-Collard.

After discussing the political and intellectual context of the Bourbon Restoration, the dissertation concentrates on the doctrinaires' theories of representative government, sovereignty of reason, political power, publicity, and democracy as social condition. Special attention is also paid to other important topics such as Guizot's theory of the new means of government, the doctrinaires' views on constitutional monarchy, their interpretation of the French Revolution, and their politics of the center.

The dissertation also takes the French doctrinaires as the groundwork and guide for a reconsideration of contemporary theories of liberalism. In doing so, it attempts to enlarge our liberal imagination by outlining the existence of an original and unorthodox form of "doctrinaire" liberalism, that is worth retrieving from oblivion today as an alternative to the deontological nature of Anglo-American contemporary liberalism. By drawing on the doctrinaires' theory of power and publicity as well as on their rich sociological and historical imagination, the final chapter reexamines the nature, virtue, and limitations of liberal democracy. It also addresses topics such as political crafting, the mutual empowerment of state and society, and the role of political power, that may have a particular relevance for the consolidation of the fledgling democracies in Eastern Europe.
