Thesis (M.A.)--Indiana University, 2015.
The thesis consists of a study intended to test the hypothesis that increasing normative attitude strength of objects decreases the discrepancy between implicit and explicit measures of attitudes. According to a theoretical framework of dynamic evaluation, evaluation is an iterative cycle of information processing and reprocessing. Implicit measures of attitudes assess the initial automatic processing, and explicit measures assess attitudes that incorporate the initial automatic processing with the later on deliberative processing. The current study proposes that when the normative attitude strength of an object is strong enough, it will be harder for the cognitive, prefrontal lobe area of the brain to suppress the influence of automatic evaluation activated in the affective, subcortical area of the brain, and therefore, people will have less motivation to engage in many iterations of deliberative processing and will instead rely on the initial automatic processing to formulate attitudes, producing more consistent explicit and implicit measures of attitudes. The hypothesis is tested and supported. The implications of the result for media persuasion studies are discussed.
