The effect of paternal factors has been shown to have a variety of developmental outcomes on offspring. Recent research findings indicate that paternal age is associated with an increased likelihood of autism. Theories regarding the etiology behind these findings often cite increases in sperm damage that occur over time. Like advanced age, obesity has also been linked to an increase in damage to sperm, thus, it should follow that paternal obesity should lead to the expression of similar developmental effects. This study examined effects of paternal age and diet on the development of autism-like behaviors in offspring through the use of animal models using behavioral and neuroanatomical techniques. Social behavior of offspring derived from sires of different ages (young and old) and diets (lean and obese) was assessed through Conditioned Place Preference and Social Approach testing. Nueroanatomical characteristics were then examined using Western Blotting techniques to examine differences in the amount of GABAb receptors within the cerebellum. Analysis of Variance conducted for assessment of group differences among behavioral and neuroanatomical measures revealed no significant differences between groups. Unfortunately, because AAO sires were unable to breed, interpretation of these findings remain unclear, with more research regarding these topics needed.
