This systematic literature review investigated the prevalence rates and risk factors of problematic video gaming (PVG), as well as 5 domains of association (anxiety and depression; societal-related outcome; social skills; cognitive-related effects, physical health and neurological changes) with PVG in children and youth. A computer database search of PsycInfo, Medline, and SocIndex of PVG studies with predominantly child and youth samples between 2005 and 2015 was done. The review included 24 studies and found strong support that being male was a risk factor for PVG, and lower academic achievement was associated with PVG. There was some support that PVG was associated with aggressive behaviours, social withdrawal, neurological changes, and impulsivity. Significant limitations in the field of child and youth PVG, including differing diagnostic terms, lack of agreement on cut-off scores and assessment tools, and insufficient attention paid to video game genre, are discussed. Lastly, counselling implications are provided when working with children and youth with PVG.
