Thesis (D.M.A.)--George Mason University, 2016.
First year collegiate music majors in almost all music programs in the United States are required to take courses in music theory. Though music theory is often offered as an individual course, private instrumental teachers can play as important a role in teaching music theory as theory instructors. With the marimba's increase in popularity in the 20th and 21st century, the marimba has become one of the primary instruments for college percussionists to be taught pitch relationships in both melodic and harmonic contexts. Since the marimba has only existed in Western classical music since the middle of the 20th century, percussionists are still developing the most efficient techniques for the instrument, while composers are still developing ways to write for the instrument. Because the majority of the method books for marimba focus primarily on technique and most of the music written specifically for the instrument are less than 100 years old, mallet percussion method books are missing western classical music theory topics that are being taught in college music theory classes. What is missing from the mallet percussion method book repertoire is a book that contains a linear progression for mallet technique that parallels the concepts learned by college music majors in his or hers first year of college music theory. This dissertation identifies music theory topics found in college theory texts that are missing in mallet percussion method books. This dissertation also confirms that first year college percussionists need a new keyboard percussion method book, written specifically for the marimba, that reinforces music theory concepts.
