Obesity has become a serious and growing public health problem in most nations. Physical inactivity is one of the key contributor to the obesity epidemic in the United States. Since walking is the most common and foundational form of physical activity, it has been considered as an effective way to prevent obesity and reduce the risks of many chronic diseases. Specific built environment elements might affect people's decision of walking. These elements can assist in the estimation of walking environment. The main objective of this study is to develop a walkability index that partially based on previous walkability measures, and evaluate the walkability status of Triple Cities Area in New York State, which is a shrinking area with high rate of obesity and overweight. An improved walkability index that representing four major aspects of walkability---diversity, density, connectivity, and proximity, has been created and validated by compared with another valid and reliable method. The results imply that downtown Binghamton is the most walkable place in the study area. The central urban areas are highly walkable while most of the suburban area are car-dependent.
