Coastal hazards that can strike with little or no warning, such as tsunamis, are particularly problematic in terms of population exposure. An important step in mitigating the loss of life includes the evacuation of populations from vulnerable areas. Evacuation can become problematic for a variety of reasons such as limited perception of risk. This research uses a scaled 2-D participatory mapping approach to explore local knowledge and risk perception to near-field tsunami hazards in Aberdeen, Washington. Routes drawn on the base maps were digitized and analyzed for approximate travel time to reach safety. The results suggest that traditional modeling underestimates actual travel time due to constraints such as population dependency, multi-hazard impacts, and general uncertainty of where to evacuate. There is therefore a need for more public education including how and where to evacuate. An understanding of the fastest paths to safety combined with multi-hazard mapping can enhance community resiliency.
