Social service and child welfare administrators make decisions in complex environments, which impact the outcomes for children and their families involved with the social service and child welfare system. The purpose of the qualitative phenomenological study is to understand the human service administrators' (i.e., social service and child welfare directors) lived experiences with decision-making processes use of use of intuition, expertise, and underlying processes. The results of the study provide themes related to the shared experiences of human service administrators. Themes emerged that addressed how human service administrators perceive their decision-making processes, and their use of intuition. Also, the factors that child welfare administrators utilize that may be predictive of positive family outcomes and their methods for maximizing the use of available resources and enhancing interagency coordination emerged from the research. There were four overarching themes that emerged from participant interviews. The first theme was "involve the appropriate staff" illustrating the importance that administrators place on consulting with and utilizing the expertise of an administrative team and other administrators in their decision-making process. The second theme was "the importance of obtaining information needed for planning" that highlights the importance of information gathering for short and long term planning, including time frames. The third theme was "professional judgment" within which there were two sub-themes: (a) personal and professional experience, and, (b) intuition. The fourth theme was "environmental considerations" which addresses the context within which decision occur, which is inclusive of public perception, politics, stakeholder groups, and varying levels of governmental policies.
