Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2015.
This study examined the impacts of communication patterns (demand-withdraw and instrumental humor) on the quality of romantic relationships and compared those impacts across individuals in gay (n=20), lesbian (n=21), and heterosexual (n=98) long-term relationships. As hypothesized, it was found that all groups reported similar levels of relationship satisfaction and a positive correlation between instrumental humor and demand-withdraw was found. Contrary to hypothesis, there were no significant differences among the three groups for use of the demand-withdraw communication pattern or the use of instrumental humor. These findings support the notion that all couple types generally function within and perceive their quality of relationships similarly.
