Spectrum sensing is a key enabling technology for a broad class of cognitive radio systems involving spectrum agility. In this dissertation, we focus on two key subjects: development of spectrum sensing algorithms and development of a cognitive radio network testbed. Spectrum sensing must be performed in a short period of time, equivalent to small-sized data. Covariance matrix estimations combined with the quickest detection are utilized to form a new cumulative spectrum sensing method to promptly detect the primary user. The analysis is performed to demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of the detection performance.

Due to the long transmission distance, limited transmission power, and path loss of the primary user, spectrum sensing in some sense can be treated as a weak signal detection problem. A function of matrix-based detection is proposed for the detection in the low SNR environment, for both single sensing mode and collaborative sensing mode.

As programmability extends to the radio, it becomes possible to create a wide range of authorized and unauthorized waveforms with a low-cost consumer device. Thus, security becomes a critical issue to spectrum sensing. A robust PCA-based approach and a least square based approach are proposed for harmful interference cancellation in spectrum sensing.

A large-scale cognitive radio network testbed using WARP and USRP2 nodes has been built. The carrier sensing busy frequency method as one spectrum sensing method and frequency band shifting for frequency agility using WARP nodes have been demonstrated using the testbed.
