Thesis (M.A.)--Regent University, 2015.
This paper attempts to assess the factors that contribute to the radical renewal at Vatican II. It argues that Rahner and de Lubac's theology influenced the changes that took place at Vatican II. However, Rahner and de Lubac's theology both borrow heavily from the works of Augustine, especially his contributions to the understanding of the relationship of nature and grace. This paper attempts to address whether Augustine's theology underwent a transformation in his debates with the Pelagians or whether Augustine's theology evolved and grew, but never fully abandoned his early emphasis on free will. Next the paper will briefly talk about how Thomas Aquinas and how de Lubac uniquely interpreted Aquinas. Finally, the paper will address problems with de Lubac and Rahner's solutions to these problems, and attempt to summarize how the work of all the aforementioned theologians relate to the decrees issued by Vatican II.
