Thesis (M.S.Ed.)--Western Illinois University, 2015.
The intersection between gender and the English language is a critical area to understanding how wider forms of oppression and domination exist in English-speaking societies and the subtleties under which they operate under the ostensibly benign guise of language. We are taught from an early age the dangers of stereotypes, and while we certainly recognize some of the more overt stereotypes that exist in our society, subtler forms are still pervasive. The topic, in terms of the relative length with which the English language has been around, is relatively new; yet, much research has been done the last few decades that have both questioned the so-called neutrality of language as well as offered new ways for oppressed minorities to assert their own identities. Of course, any call for change initiated by those with little or no power in society is usually accompanied by extreme resistance by those who wish for the status quo to be undisturbed. Concerning the conversation on gender stereotypes, calls for reform have typically been met with derision or outright hostility (mostly by males, but also by females).

This paper will largely used published materials concerning the intersection of gender and the English language to gain an understanding of the complexity of the topic. That being said, the nature of this paper calls for the type of analysis and criticism that quantitative analysis would do little to illuminate. While quantitative research methods certainly have much to contribute to the discussion, I will mostly be reviewing the literature concerning gender stereotyping in the English language to provide readers with a greater understanding of the topic and its development. This requires textual analysis and criticism. To that end, the article that will set the tone and guide my research will be Laurel Richardson's "Gender Stereotyping in the English Language" (Richardson, 2001) I will use this article as somewhat of a launching pad to the subject and will return to it throughout the paper as a means of reorienting the direction my literature review will take. In order to explore the topic, I will also have to delve in areas of research that, while not exactly touching upon gender and the English language, provide clarifications concerning the development of the study of language and its influence on post-modernism. This requires me to include articles not just written by education specialists and linguists, but also diverse fields such as English Literature, anthropology, and sociology. Researchers in these fields have contributed enormous amounts of research that any study concerning the topic would be incredibly flawed without. Their research will be vital to my study.
