Social networking is the hallmark of the digital age. Three widely used social networking sites (SNSs) are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. These interactive sites have spawned an active audience with users documenting their lives using status updates, tweets, and photographs. Death and grief, once considered private and taboo, have left their digital footprints on SNSs. Through the lens of the Uses and Gratifications Theory and by employing a content analysis, this study examines how and why people are grieving on SNSs by reviewing written and visual components of 170 posts. The study also extends the UGT. Escape was the most common uses and gratifications among written content while preservation of memory was the most common motivation behind posting visual content on SNSs. This research works to fill the void in current research on grief on Twitter and Instagram. A comparison of the sites revealed Facebook users grieve through groups, pages, and profiles. Users wrote directly to the deceased frequently on Facebook profiles to escape reality. Groups and pages connect people and sense of community/social interaction was a common finding. Twitter and Instagram are more suited for short bursts of information. Instagram's design allowed more photographs to be posted on the site. Most people utilized Twitter for emotional expression while they used Facebook and Instagram to escape and continue bonds with the deceased.
