Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2015.
The horror film genre emerged in the late nineteenth century and, with each passing decade since, a new era of terror has materialized with horror fans flocking to theaters in droves. While popular culture tends to explore why people possess a seemingly barbaric desire to be afraid, what is equally critical to understand is in what way and to what extent our collective fears are represented by the carefully calculated films that successfully depict our modem day societal fears. This thesis recognizes Western horror films as representations of culturally collective fears for periods spanning the 1960s and 1970s decades.
