Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of Houston, 2002.
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the manner in which three artists, Ludwig von Beethoven, Leo Tolstoy and Leos Janacek, developed narrative forms in three works called "Kreutzer Sonata." This thesis speculates that Beethoven's Sonata for Violin and Piano, Op. 47, "Kreutzer," Tolstoy's novella The Kreutzer Sonata and Janacek's First String Quartet, "Kreutzer Sonata," all contain narrative elements; these artists are also linked through a common reflection on the subject of sexual morality. Each of the personal histories of Beethoven, Tolstoy and Janacek, respectively, imply a fixation on morality in each author's relationship with a particular woman during the time when he composed his own version of the Kreutzer Sonata.

This thesis explores ways in which a sonata form "narrative" may be interpreted with regard to Beethoven's "Kreutzer" Sonata. Many critics view the sonata form structure as a narrative form reflective of social trends in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The analysis focuses on the manner in which the first movement of Beethoven's "Kreutzer" Sonata both reinforces and deviates from standard sonata form; this author argues that Beethoven's struggle with issues of morality in the years 1802--1805, and a documented relationship with Countess Josephine Deym, became embedded within the work's musical narrative. Tolstoy's The Kreutzer Sonata represents a violent reaction to Beethoven's sonata. This author examines both Tolstoy's evolving philosophy on sex and marriage and his particular view of Beethoven's work as sub-themes in the plot of the novella. Janacek's First String Quartet, intended as a reaction against Tolstoy's misogynistic treatment of the character of the wife in his novella, uses narrative techniques found in his late operas. Janacek's interest in the young Kamila Stosslova in the last eleven years of his life forms the basis for the plots in his post-1917 operas, in which he creates heroines out of subsidiary female characters from realist fiction. This author uses compositional and narrative procedure in these operas as a guide for interpreting the narrative content of the First String Quartet, which she believes, also, reflects Janacek's interest in Stosslova.

This study demonstrates the manner in which three works became vehicles for communication of issues of morality in human nature. These works, by their interconnectedness, are shown as transcendent of time and tradition, demonstrating the commonality of personal experience in the lives of three artists representing different eras, classes and nationalities, on the one hand; on the other hand, they are portrayed as highly individual explorations of morality using the unique narrative devices of their genres.
