This thesis reports on the design, construction, and performance of a new ultracold atoms apparatus with the capability of resolving individual fermionic potassium atoms trapped in an optical lattice for the purpose of investigating locally ordered quantum states. Our apparatus incorporates a high numerical aperture imaging objective to image the fluorescence from the 405nm excited state transition while atoms are simultaneously cooled on the 770nm transition.
