This investigation examined the role of spirituality in language learning for 21 spiritually motivated workers, or Language Learners for Spiritual Purposes (LLSPs, as coined in this study), specifically focusing on spirituality's role in their language learning beliefs, motivation, identity, agency, strategies, and interaction. Through guided interviews centered on language learning stories, a theory emerged regarding spirituality's role in language learning for the participants and potentially other learners who share participants' spiritual purpose.

The theory proposes that Latin American missionaries perceive their spiritual call as a core and catalyst for their language learning for spiritual purposes. First, belief in a spiritual call forms the core of Latin American missionaries' motivation, identity, and agency in language learning. Second, belief in a spiritual call, with corollary beliefs regarding motivation, identity, and agency, forms a catalyst for implementation of language learning strategies and intentional community interaction, leading to language growth. An accompanying tree-shaped model illustrates the relationship of principle themes to the theory, reflecting an organic nature of continued growth with spirituality permeating throughout.

The study contributes understanding to the second language acquisition field where research on spirituality and language learning is scarce and where learners' stories can elucidate how learners perceive and navigate the language learning journey. With participants from 10 sending countries, who have worked in 20 countries and learned 17 languages, the study also gives voice to a sparsely investigated group of learners, non-Western missionaries who have learned languages other than (or in addition to) English. The study contributes insight for language learners and teachers, including missionary trainers, especially those holding a spiritually inclined worldview or at least recognizing spirituality's integral role in human life and experience.
