Thesis (M.A.)--Hofstra University, 2016.
This research study demonstrates how using a game-based learning approach in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) design challenge can encourage young students to use higher level thinking skills. This study took place in a kindergarten inclusion classroom that is part of a public school district. Six students were selected for this study. In comparison to the rest of the class, these students are very bright based on their classroom performance in the first two semesters. The study group participated in activities that focused on number relationships on a hundred grid, as well as number comparisons. Student improvement and success was measured by analyzing behaviors, student work and their final design project. The results indicate that the games implemented throughout the unit strengthened some of the students' understanding of number relationships. The study suggests that using games and STEM in early childhood could deepen students' understanding of mathematical concepts and number relationships.
