Throughout many years of public education in the United States, the federal government has implemented a school meal program, both through the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. From its inception, the school meal program has aimed to support all students in consuming nutritious meals at school. Although the program is now available in 94% of the schools within the United States, many students continue to not participate in the meal program.

Research has shown that nutrition does have an impact on cognitive functioning. There are varied aspects of nutrition that have individual and together collective impact on learning opportunities. In addition, individual choice and circumstance as well as knowledge of quality in choices available within a diet prove important in the decision-making that students are asked to make throughout the school day.

The results of this study show that within some academic areas studied, there is potential impact from nutrition intake as evidenced by standardized math test scores at the elementary level studied. The results of the study show, however, that the difference in levels of healthy habits measured through survey responses of a student group at the high school level did not also result in a difference in reported grade-point average earned. Student feedback about choice and administrator feedback about student choice speak to child nutrition program improvement through a number of ways including allowing students to have input and choice within the options of the child nutrition program.
