One of the many consequences of risky behavior is undesirable impact on one's health. A substantial amount of research has established meaningful relationships between personality and various types of risk taking. The purpose of this study is to develop a broad measure of health risk taking. Whereas previous measures of health risk taking generally focus on one or two specific areas of health risk taking, this study assessed a range of health behaviors across a spectrum of healthy and risky health behaviors. The goal of this study was to gain a more broad understanding of personality and the spectrum of health risk taking by examining a wide range of health behaviors and multiple measures of personality traits. Test construction and multiple rounds of subsequent psychometric revisions resulted in the Health Risk Questionnaire (HRQ), a 112 item self-report measure covering 12 domains. This study explores the initial construction and validation of the HRQ. Relationships between the HRQ and existing personality measures, including the PSY-5-RF, ZKPQ and MPQ, and a biographical and health behavior questionnaire are presented. Limitations of the current project and future directions are discussed.
