We make numerous decisions in everyday life, from what to eat to what projects to work on. Decision theorists have posited that we compute a value for the various options we may choose, and choose the option with the highest value. Of central interest to decision-making research is how such value computations may be performed. Normative models have been proposed for how rational decision-makers should compute value, but the behavior of humans and animals has been shown to diverge from the prescriptions of these theories. This is at least partially because these theories do not take into account constraints that the decision-maker may have, such as limited cognitive capacities resources or learning constraints. In this work, I present evidence of some constraints on decision-making. I also present results on the implementation of value computations in the brain, specifically within the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and the orbitofrontal cortex.
