The introductory chapter situates the study of graffiti in the continuity of natural language texts. Here, the graffiti genre is defined as writing that is unauthorized by the owner or steward of a particular canvas. Additional dimensions of graffiti-likeness are also described.

Chapter Two provides a few distinct theories to account for types of graffiti writing and suggests that the best approach to explanations of graffiti are ethnographic, in a register by register fashion. This chapter also defines sociolinguistic concepts useful in an analysis of graffiti.

Chapters Three and Four, respectively, examine the graffiti-writing practices of taggers and Chicano gang members. These chapters analyze aspects of the world views and social practices of taggers and Chicano gang members for the purpose of understanding their specific graffiti literacies.
