There has been a growing interest in community-based participatory online news services as both actual initiatives and academic subjects, in hopes that they can contribute to a better communicatively-integrated community. However, the need to move beyond case studies and start building systematic models of how they can sustain themselves and affect civic life was left largely untouched, due to the limitations of available data in a field in flux.

To take the first steps towards a systematic model, this dissertation takes a community -ecological perspective and utilizes agent-based modeling (ABM) combined with case studies as a modified grounded theory approach. Three unique aspects of the media environment were categorized, and each aspect was built into an ABM simulation paired with a validation case study. The goal was to find possible patterns in each aspect and discuss their implications, which will be valuable as a guide for citizen and community-based emerging news media projects to fulfill their missions.

The first model is the news market competition and niche-finding efforts, as one of the key aspects of the external environment for the emerging news media. The second model was the tension and collaboration among professional staff and volunteer citizen journalists in the "mixed newsroom", addressing a key aspect of the internal organizational element. The third one was the role that the emerging news media can play in the flow of information in the existing communication networks of the community, by functioning as a connector between different layers of communication.

The findings of each study showed that emerging news media could find a suitable niche in the more local scope with stronger issue advocacy. Collaboration in the newsroom is more vibrant when the editorial authority of the staff is lowered, and the motivation of volunteers kept higher. Also, emerging media can bring about different changes in information flow depending on which communication layers it connects. By taking note of such larger patterns and recognizing the need for a systematic approach to the local media ecology, emerging news media may contribute to building better public spheres and thereby stronger communities.
