Interactive online video applications, such as video telephony, are known for their vulnerability to network conditions. With the increasing usage of handheld wireless mobile devices, capable of capturing and processing high-quality videos, combined with the flexibility in end-users movement, has created a paradigm shift in perceived video quality for such delay-intolerant services. The dissertation first identifies the factors affecting the perceived video quality of mobile video telephony applications. Based on live video telephony traces, we quantitatively derive the correlation between the end-user Quality of Experience, the network Quality of Service and user/device movements. We henceforth, develop end-users perceived video quality prediction models for mobile video telephony apps.

The second part of the study focuses on smartphone generated interactive videos. The significant increase in the motion content in such a video changes the composition of the video, unlike the Desktop era. We examine the received video quality coupled with wireless packet losses for such videos and thereby, develop a framework for reliable delivery for interactive multimedia applications. The framework accounts for video object motion comprising foreground end-user motion and background scene changes in the network transmissions. The packet-level redundancy and its performances are analyzed depending on the different degrees of video motion for saving network bandwidth and improving received video quality.

Interactive multimedia applications are designed to work within the perimeters of network resources. Cognitive radio networks have been suggested as one of the solutions to alleviate network resource crunch at the last hop. In comparison to other access networks, the efficacy of collaborative spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks greatly determine the success of real-time video transmissions over it. We propose to secure collaborative spectrum sensing for mobile unlicensed users to avoid spectrum wastage and thereby, facilitating seamless end-to-end interactive video communications. The spectrum sensing capabilities of a mobile unlicensed user depends on the path-loss and shadowing experienced by the end-user at its location. We therefore, secure collaborative spectrum sensing by considering trust-based parameters: Location Reliability, which reflects path-loss characteristics of the wireless channel and Malicious Intention, which captures the true intention of unlicensed users.

Next, we examine delay-intolerant multimedia transmissions for the mobile, unlicensed end-users having interleaved spectrum sensing and data transmission periods in mobile cognitive radio networks. The interleaving is required for collaborative spectrum sensing, but this leads to intermittent dis-connectivity in transmission of delay-intolerant data. We thus, jointly schedule collaborative spectrum sensing and transmission slots among unlicensed mobile users based on their locations, sensing capabilities and delay constraints of their transmission data.
