Thesis (M.A.)--Trinity International University, 2015.
Edmund A. Opitz was a Christian libertarian political writer for the Foundation of Economic Education and its libertarian journal, The Freeman, and the Christian libertarian organization Spiritual Mobilization's journal, Faith & Freedom, as well as the author of several books, a national speaker, and the founder and director of The Remnant, an organization of conservative and libertarian Christian ministers. This study will provide an analysis of Edmund Opitz's Christian libertarian thought and work towards an understanding of Opitz's influence and reception among Christian libertarian political figures. While many historians have focused on the contributions of American Christians to the development of the conservative political movement of the 20th century, there are very few scholarly attempts to chronicle the contributions of Christians to the modern political libertarian movement in the United States during that same period. This study will seek to begin to fill that lacuna by analyzing the Christian libertarian thought of Edmund Opitz and the impact his thought had in persuading American Christians to adopt political libertarianism.

The research for this study utilizes the written published work of Edmund Opitz. These include the various columns and book reviews written in the Christian libertarian journal, Faith and Freedom, in the mid 1950s; columns written in the libertarian journal, The Freeman, from the late 1950s until the early 1990s; various books written by Opitz; as well as other published articles in various other magazines and journals. These materials encompass Edmund Opitz's Christian libertarian thought throughout his entire career as a political writer. This thesis will provide the only in-depth study of Edmund Opitz's Christian libertarian thought, influence, and reception and offer an essential contribution to the scholarly conversation on the influence of religion within late 20th century American politics.
