The relationship between humans and animals is full of complexities and nuances. This study has considered select aspects of human-animal interactions in an effort to better understand the role animals play in the lives of humans and the bonds forged in those relationships. The purpose of this research was to explore the effects of social connectedness, owner-pet trait compatibility, level of exposure to traumatic events, gender and other demographic identifiers on the perceived strength of human-companion animal attachment bonds. The results of the stepwise multiple regression analysis (Model 5) show that the predictive variables (trait compatibility, annual household income, type of pet, presence of children in the home and age of participant) did predict the strength of attachment bonds between owner and pet. The R square revealed that 25.7% of the variance in the dependent variable (attachment to pet) in the study sample, was accounted for by the predictive variables retained in the chosen model, F (5,138) = 9.211, p < .001.
