Thesis (Ed.D.)--Hofstra University, 2015.
The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent, if any, the desirable qualities identified by experts in the field of Young Adult literature were present in a selection of contemporary Novels in Verse written for adolescents. This included Novels in Verse that were award winning, teen choice, and both. Secondarily, the purpose was to determine what qualities were present in Novels in Verse that had won awards and were concurrently popular with their intended audience. By using critical content analysis, a detailed study was done of representative novels in each category. Novels were chosen based on specific criteria in relation to popularity and number and type of awards won. A rubric was created based on the criteria defined by experts as present in high quality Young Adult novels. Each novel was then read and evaluated with the rubric in order to determine high quality characteristics in Novels in Verse. Each type of Novel in Verse had specific strengths and unique qualities that showed them to be high quality Young Adult novels. Data analysis indicated that the experimental and flexible nature of the genre allows for a greater diversity of form, theme, plot, and character development than is generally found in Young Adult prose novels. Future research needs to be conducted in order to determine impact on student learning and use in classroom settings. Further research will help uncover the wide diversity of topics and formats young adults have access to through the expanding genre of Novels in Verse.
