Regular physical activity (PA) is beneficial to people of all ages, yet in the United States, 60% of children and adolescents are not active enough on a daily basis. Problems associated with physical inactivity, such as obesity and diabetes, are now a growing health concern for some households with children. Self-determination theory (SDT) is a prominent theory of motivation used in a number of interventions to increase PA behaviors. However, studies have conflicting outcomes regarding SDTs universality of constructs and processes across gender and developmental periods. The purpose of the current qualitative multiple case study was to examine gender and age similarities and differences in motivational orientations and structures for organized and leisure PA, testing the veracity of self-determination theory's universality assumption. In-depth interviews were conducted with children and their parents, and questionnaires administered to children and adolescents including the Motives for Physical Activity Revised, Participation Motivation Questionnaire, and Perceptions of Parents Scales. A sample of four children and four adolescents with equal boys and girls were recruited, and participants were aged 8 years and 12 years with some involvement in leisure or organized PA. Boys and girls of both age groups agreed that competence motivation was important for initiation and adherence to PA behaviors, and that fun and enjoyment encouraged continuity and increased PA levels over time. Participants were divided on how factors autonomous motivation and relatedness influenced their motivation for PA involvement. Study results supported that motivational orientations and structures of boys and girls by developmental stage diverged in fulfillment of SDT basic needs, and how participants experienced intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Results indicated that motivational structure by gender was invariant---partially supporting self-determination theory tenets. Recommendations include analyzing and assessing adolescent girls PA motivation by age, developing interventions accounting for divergence in motivational orientations and structures, and investigating qualitatively SDT universality of constructs and processes across culture, gender, and developmental periods. In addition, research may consider other determinants of PA participation and levels, such as socioeconomic status, parental education, and parental PA levels and involvement---identifying factors that may increase risk status among children and adolescents.
