The objectives of the present dissertation were to study the role of Ca on immune function and uterine diseases and to investigate to reduce the incidence of subclinical hypocalcemia (SCH) in early postpartum dairy cows.

Chapter 3 evaluates the peripartal Ca concentrations in cows at low or high risk of developing uterine disease and shows that cows with SCH had elevated concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) in serum during the first 12 days in milk (DIM), reduced neutrophil function, and increased risk of developing uterine diseases compared with normocalcemic (NC) cows.

Chapter 4 studied the effects of inducing SCH in healthy nonlactating dairy cows, simulating the loss of Ca of an early postpartum dairy cow, and documents the negative effects of SCH on dry matter (DM) intake, energy metabolism, and function of innate immune cells.

Chapter 5 evaluates the effects of Ca supplementation during the early postpartum on Ca concentrations and health. Two Ca supplementation schemes were used and both resulted in increased serum Ca concentration during the first 4 DIM compared with unsupplemented controls, but these supplementation schemes increased the incidence of metritis, particularly because of negative effects on cows considered to be of low risk of metritis. In addition, Ca supplementation increased the incidence of subclinical ketosis in cows of low risk of metritis and increased morbidity in primiparous cows. Nevertheless, supplementing Ca to multiparous cows showed some benefits to health.

Chapter 6 evaluates the effects of Ca supplementation during the early postpartum on productive and reproductive performance and shows that Ca supplementation had no effect in milk yield, reduced fertility in primiparous, whereas in multiparous, supplementing Ca increased pregnancy per AI and reduced time to pregnancy.

Chapter 7 investigates the effects of feeding two diets with distinct dietary cationanion difference (DCAD) supplemented with two sources of vitamin D, cholecalciferol or calcidiol, during late gestation on Ca and vitamin D homeostasis, energetic metabolism, and performance of periparturient dairy cows. Results showed that cows fed the negative DCAD diet maintained better Ca concentrations during the pre- and postpartum periods, and calcidiol increased milk production.
