The dissertation examines the background of the Chinese people: their language, culture, and education. This is followed by a review of the teaching of English in China in 1862 to Taiwan in the 1980s. A major focus of this dissertation is on the present situation in Taiwan concerning the teaching of English: the private and public schools, the classroom activities, and the English language Junior High School textbook used in 1972 and in 1986. In conclusion, a summary of some implications for society and suggestions that some educators and non-educators are taking is given.
