Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2015.
The following research explores the experience of mothers of older children diagnosed with severe autism. Generic qualitative inquiry was used to examine their experiences raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder from the time of diagnosis to present day. Eight mothers were interviewed to gather rich, meaningful data pertaining to important aspects of their experiences over time. Thematic analysis was utilized to explore emergent themes occurring throughout the data. Themes discovered included: the Emotional Journey; the Importance of Coping; the Impact of Social Support; and Resilience. Theoretical orientation was humanistic in nature, specifically comparing the data to Maslow's Theory of Human Motivation.
