Thesis (M.S.)--Eastern Oregon University, 2015.
The purpose of this research was to investigate what types of reading comprehension strategies are being used in mainstream classrooms to help older elementary English Language Learners (ELL) access and comprehend grade level academic text. Furthermore, this qualitative research gathered opinions and evidence from three fourth grade teachers to support their reasons for using the different sheltered instruction strategies in their small reading groups. Data sources included recorded and transcribed interviews along with observational notes. Findings from this study give an example on how Common Core Standards have shifted our reading instruction and emphasis to teach students to be prepared for college. This study demonstrates that these students are learning key strategies and techniques to help them 'read to learn'.
