Thesis (M.A.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2015.
There are many challenges facing the public health field, especially in maternal and child health. One health achievement is healthier babies and mothers (Turnock, 2012). However, according to the Breastfeeding Report Card United States 2014, 79.2 percent mothers initiated breastfeeding, 40.7 percent of babies were exclusively breastfed at three months, and only 18.8 percent at six months (2014).This is significant because breastfeeding provides health and economic benefits over formula feeding. Due to the dramatic decline in breastfeeding duration, it is crucial to examine what factors are preventing mothers from breastfeeding for the recommended duration (Academy of Pediatrics, 2012). Using data collected through self-reported surveys, this research examines college students' preferences toward breastfeeding. Limited dependent variable models (LOGITs) were estimated to statistically infer the relationship between student knowledge of breastfeeding, demographic characteristics, acceptance of breastfeeding, and other variables, to determine potential barriers preventing mothers from reaching national goals (Healthy People, 2010).
