At the turn of the 19th century India, Mexico and Japan switched from a monetary standard based on silver, to a monetary standard based on gold. In doing so, they pegged their exchange rate against their main trading partners on the gold standard. Using a newly constructed dataset, I assess the impact of this decision on trade flows. I provide evidence that the main determinants of the exchange rate were exogenous to trade in this particular setting, making these ideal cases to analyze. I develop a gravity model to take exchange rate uncertainty into account, and estimate the effects of exchange rate volatility and depreciation on trade. I find evidence that India would have had a higher trade surplus had it stayed on the silver standard thanks to the effects of currency depreciation. In the cases of Mexico and Japan, adoption of the gold standard occurred after the large depreciation of silver versus gold was mostly over. I thus find that in their case, joining the gold standard increased trade flows thanks to the reduction in exchange rate uncertainty.
