Sporting performance is now used as a means to make a substantial amount of money. Spectators bet on results, clubs earn money for winning, and performers are paid based on their level of performance. For these reasons, techniques to enhance sport performance are researched. Previous research indicates that mental imagery is successful at increasing physical performance (Driskell, Copper, & Moran, 1994); however, a new concept of fantasizing about successful performance has not yet been applied to sports performance. Fantasy is believed to sap energy levels when applied to weight loss and shopping fantasies (Oettingen & Wadden, 1991); however, during sporting performance, when an individual is nervous, fantasy may help to reduce the anxiety levels created by the task they have to perform. Anxiety, if too abundant, is shown to decrease performance (Englert & Bertrams, 2012). Therefore fantasizing could reduce anxiety, and in turn increase sports performance. Furthermore, the combination of fantasy and mental imagery could further enhance performance, with fantasy calming the individual down and mental imagery then focusing the individual on the task. I hypothesized that the participants engaging in fantasy would have less anxiety than those in the mental imagery condition. I further hypothesized that the participants who received fantasy followed by mental imagery would have the largest increase in task performance. Results indicated that fantasy followed by mental imagery, along with mental imagery alone reduced anxiety in participants. Furthermore, those who received fantasy followed by mental imagery had the largest task performance improvement of all the conditions. Therefore, results suggest that fantasy followed by mental imagery may be a more successful technique than fantasy alone, mental imagery alone, and mental imagery followed by fantasy because it seemed to decrease anxiety and improve task performance. The task improvement may have occurred, however, because the fantasy followed by mental imagery group began with a lower task 1 score than all other conditions. Therefore, the effect of fantasy on task performance is not entirely clear.
