Social networking connects people globally and enables users to share every aspect of their life with the click of a button. Exact locations, real time photos, personal videos and even a particular thought a user had can be instantly uploaded in a matter of seconds. In the last decade there has been tremendous growth in the technology used to accommodate so many people. One of the most well-known social networking sites that took advantage of the Internet's capabilities and its seemingly endless technology was Facebook. Facebook formed in 2004 and set the standard for cyber mass media and social networking. Not long after that came YouTube in 2005 then Twitter in 2006. Worldwide there are over 2 billion active members, 50 percent of the United States, that in some way utilize online social networking, many on a daily basis (Sengupta, 2011).

All three of these sites play a significant role in the social networking kingdom, however not all active members of these sites intend to share their personal lives. There are users whose main purpose is to cause harm to others through the use of social networking. This paper will analyze how registered users of three cyber networking platforms Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are manipulating the intended purposes of these social websites and expose the increased threat to the United States national security as a result. For this project U.S. government agencies were evaluated on their ability to protect the critical infrastructure of the United States as well as an in depth analysis on current social networking trends that could have an adverse effect on national security as a whole.
