Thesis (M.A.)--University of Massachusetts Lowell, 2015.
Very few studies have examined how social media sources are related to a person's perception about crime. The purpose of this study is to see how social media sources are related to college students' perceptions about crime, especially their fear of crime. The study asked the 44 participants questions about their use of social media. Additionally the participants were asked questions about local crime in their neighborhood. The study revealed that there was a relationship between social media services and fear of crime. An association was not found among participants knowing that law enforcement agencies had accounts on social media services and the fear of crime scale. On the other hand, the study did discover a relationship between knowledge of law enforcement social media accounts and whether or not a participant felt safe walking alone at night within his/her own neighborhood.
