This exploratory study on the personal experiences of totally blind adults in Kerala, India was intended to advance knowledge about their coping skills and resilience in the face of constant adversity. Although the majority of visually impaired people live in developing countries such as India, psychosocial studies about them are scarce in the literature. Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory, Vygotsky's scaffolding theory, and various theories about coping and resilience provided the theoretical foundation for this study. In this case study, information obtained from interviews, autobiographical narratives, and relevant artifacts of 16 adults (8 men and 8 women) with total blindness was analyzed. Content analysis of the data collected from the participants, including the congenitally blind and the illiterate, showed that they had normal functional skills. The coping skills in the adventitious blind participants depended on their willingness to unconditionally accept the disability and the level of independence they showed before becoming blind. Suggestions for improving the psychological, behavioral, and social aspects of the lives of the blind population in Kerala were also offered by the participants, such as increasing the monthly government pension to improve their quality of living, or educating visually-impaired children in exclusive blind schools instead of regular schools. These findings are expected to provide additional information to policy makers on improving the quality of life of blind people in developing countries, thereby leading to positive social change.
